RMLP Protest at Black Desert Resort PGA Event

Respected Shivwits Elder Speaks Truth to Reef at Fake Town Hall

RMLP Protest at Black Desert Resort PGA Event

October 4th, 2026: Nearly fifty Native Americans, along with ten or fifteen people from the local community, protested outside Black Desert Resort during the PGA golf tournament on October 3rd.

See this Next-Door Post for Video and our picture gallery at the bottom of this page to see Southern Paiutes and aligned Native People playing drums and holding signs protesting Reef Capital's Black Desert Resort plans to take their land and water without consent for its new luxury golf resort expansion. Check out the KSL Picture above and the KSL article about the protest.

The large crowd of Southern Paiutes, Shivwits members, and local supporters extended all the way along the sidewalk of Snow Canyon Parkway fronting Black Desert Resort. Elders, children, and everyone in between braved scorching 90-degree heat to send a powerful message, holding signs saying:

NO GOLF COURSES ON SACRED LAND PROTECT THE RED MOUNTAIN

NO MORE GOLF COURSES IN A DROUGHT

Hundreds of Red Mountain Land Preservers supporters drove by, cheering and waving enthusiastically to protestors, while hundreds more PGA attendees, marathoners, and local residents discovered for the first time how Black Desert Resort and Reef Capital Partners are disregarding Native and local community opposition to their mega-golf course resort expansion into Shivwits Band of Paiutes Reservation Lands.

Thanks to everyone who showed up or drove by to support local land stewardship and the Shivwits people's fight to keep their land and water safe from harmful development!

RMLP at Swiss Days & Heritage Days Parades

Respected Shivwits Elder Speaks Truth to Reef at Fake Town Hall

RMLP Protest at Black Desert Resort PGA Event

September 28th, 2026: Our Red Mountain Land Preservers float for the Santa Clara Swiss Days parade was a joyous, vivid testimony to our Southern Paiute indigenous heritage. Decorated with love and filled with our honored Elders and cherished children, the float signified our mission to stand together in peace to protect the Red Mountain from harmful development, today and for generations to come.

Check out our blog post on the parades.

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE OUR PICTURE GALLERY BELOW THIS SECTION.  Be sure to check out the close up of the Red Mountain cutout on the car for a surprise message from a worried desert fox penned in our children's handwriting: "I don't want to get hit by golf balls!"

The outpouring of community support along the parade route from so many of our Utah friends and neighbors was heartwarming and encouraging. We are so grateful.

The land is sacred.

The water is life.

The wildlife are our relatives.

And our voices--our vote--are our power.

Respected Shivwits Elder Speaks Truth to Reef at Fake Town Hall

Shivwits Land is Irreplaceable. Our Sovereignty Can't be Bought.

September 18th, 2026: Please see  RMLP's Instagram and our blog post to read the powerful speech honored Elder Lawrence Snow gave to a Reef Capital "Town Hall," one of several canned meetings set up by Reef to try to change the narrative and claim they're listening to the Shivwits community when they are not.  RMLP's Instagram  and our blog post to read the powerful speech honored Elder Lawrence Snow gave to a Reef Capital "Town Hall," one of several canned meetings set up by Reef to try to change the narrative and claim they're listening to the Shivwits community when they are not.

Reef is obviously feeling the pressure from our community educational endeavors, including our 'Take the Fight to Reef' letter. (See the PDF below.)  Good work writing those letters, which are obviously effective.  Keep them coming!

Here is the start of Elder Lawrence Snow's speech to Reef. See our blog post for more:

My name is Lawrence Snow, and I have lived on my reservation for most of my life. I am proud of my family, my people, and my community. I have spent my life experiencing, respecting, and caring for this land. That is why I cannot stand by while a development project threatens the land, water, and future of the Shivwits people.

As you at Capitol Reef should know, the Shivwits Band was a terminated tribe from 1953 to 1980. During those years, we were forced to pay taxes on our own land simply to keep from losing it. We incorporated ourselves and worked to support our community by selling sand and gravel and leasing land to cattle ranchers. We came dangerously close to losing our land. Our ancestors worked hard to keep this land. That history cannot simply be ignored because a corporation now sees an opportunity to develop our land...

September 18th, 2026: Please see our blog post about Reef Capital's phony public forums, where attendance was rigidly regulated and content stringently limited.

These pretend Town Hall meetings appear to have been set up on the fly by Reef/Black Desert to project the appearance of valid input from the Native American people whose land and water Reef Capital/Black Desert is taking without their consent.

The good news? Reef's CEO was highly discomforted by being face to face with real Shivwits people objecting to Reef's harmful development on their land.

The Fight to Stop Reef's Taking of Shivwits Land and Water

UPDATE September 3rd, 2006.  Red Mountain Land Preservers has an adorable cow in the Santa Clara Swiss Days line up. Standing on the northwest corner of Santa Clara Drive and Heights Drive across the street from the City Hall, she sports a striking image of the sacred Red Mountain with the refrain "Their Land, Their Water, Their Voice."

Her other flank says "Nuwuvi"--the ancestral name of the Southern Paiutes meaning "the People".  A QR code invites passersby to learn more about the Red Mountain Land Preservers and their efforts to save their ancestral land and precious water. See our Blog post for pictures!

The Fight to Stop Reef's Taking of Shivwits Land and Water

UPDATE on September 1st, 2026: Please see a Kayenta Connections article in our News Section on how Reef/Black Desert are appropriating land and water for golf courses and an airport.  Recent events shed new light on the impact Reef Capital Partners’ proposed golf course resort and the tactics Reef and its affiliates are using to suppress the rights of Shivwits members who oppose them.

UPDATE on AUGUST 5TH, 2026: See JUST THE FACTS about a new Band Council ordinance which violates the Tribal Constitutional Rights of the Shivwits people and appears to be an attempt to intimidate, strong-arm, and silence the majority of Shivwits people who oppose Reef's destructive development.
